The emperor decided to execute Demetrius. According to a legend from Thessalonica, Saint Demetrius was a deacon, who was martyred in Sirmium on an unknown date, in the public baths. Leontius built two churches in honor of Saint Demetrius in the 5th century: one in Sirmium and the other in Thessaloniki. Around the year 418, the relics of Saint Demetrius were deposited in the church of Thessalonica.
