Ancient Russian Quadripartite icon with Crucifixion 31x26.5cm.The first icon ''Softening of Evil Hearts'' forms as a symbolic object several ''symbolic'' icons of the Virgin. Everyone runs after prayer invoking the softening of the heart by easing physical and mental suffering. This image of the Virgin is interceded between warring and feuding enemy factions. There is no historical evidence of this icon but it possibly comes from southwest Russia. The Virgin is also represented with six swords in her heart and a central one pointing down. The number seven in scripture implies completeness, but in this case it indicates the immensity of Mary's heart during her earthly life. The second icon is entitled ''Console my pain'' and was brought to Moscow by the Cossacks in 1640. Her following is very much alive following a miracle that occurred in 1760.The image expresses the intimate suffering of Mary, on Golgotha, while her only son is dying unjustly. Thus she takes on the sufferings of humanity. The scroll reads ''Judge according to justice, act with mercy and magnanimity''.The third icon is linked to the story of the penance of Theophilus, a church steward shown praying in front of an image of the Mother of God, entitled ''The Hope of Sinners''.The half-bust figure of the Mother of God and the position of the Child are peculiarities to note. Mary's hands make a circle around the figure of Jesus. The last icon is titled ''She Who Shows the Way". Made in Russia.
