The icon highlights two consecutive moments reported in the Gospel: after the departure of the Magi, an angel appears to Joseph in a dream and orders him to flee with the child and with Mary to Egypt: "After they left, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said to him: `` Get up, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt and stay there until I tell you, because Herod is about to look for the child to make him die. '' Egypt was a week's walk from Bethlehem and there were several Jews, gathered in colonies: it was therefore the ideal place to escape from the dangers looming over Palestine, as had already happened for others before them, such as Solomon and Hadad. '' Then Herod, seeing himself mocked by the Magi, was very angry and sent to kill all the males who were in Bethlehem and all its territory from the age of two onwards ''.
