According to tradition the first image of the Icon was found on July 8, 1579, in the city of Kazan by a 9 years old girl, to whom the location of the image was revealed in three Marian Apparition, telling her the precise spot where Christians had hidden the icon before the invasion of the city by the Tartarians.
The icon blessed the city and was celebrated twice a year: upon July 8 and October 22, the first being the date of the Marian apparition and the second one the day when the city was released from the Polish people.
During the XVIII century the icon of the Mother of God of Kazan was considered the new Protector of the capital City of St Petersburg.
From an iconographic point of view the Madonna of Kazan is considered as a variance of the 'Odighitria', a Greek word meaning 'She who shows the Way'.
Traditionally Mary holds the Baby in her arms, while in this icon the Baby is sitting up making a blessing gesture.
The Mother of God is portrait down to her breast, an image which has been really popular until the XVI sec.
