This image of the Virgin is linked to the apparition to Saint Andrew the Fool in Christ, and is typically Russian. It is said that one day Saint Andrew was praying for salvation against the invasion of a horde of barbarians. Before Father Andrea miraculously appeared the Virgin, who took off the veil, or maphorion, and spread it over the faithful as a symbol of protection. That same night the barbarians were dispersed. St. Andrew is also visible in the lower part of the icon, while he points out to his disciple the Virgin with the Veil, the retinue of angels and the Saints in deesis.
This religious icon sees a second story intertwined, that of Saint Romanus the Melodist. Also celebrated on October 1st, this saint is portrayed in the center of the lower section while he miraculously sings in front of kings and priests after being mute. The saint is again present at the bottom right, where he is depicted sick while receiving the apparition of the Virgin.This lovely orthodox icon dates back to the 18th century and comes from Central Russia.
