This bronze cross is characterized by an internal core in the shape of a Byzantine cross around which 20 scenes that celebrate the festivities of the Orthodox liturgical year come to life. In particular, these are the 16 Great Feasts, which celebrate selected episodes from the Old and New Testament. Among the scenes on the sides only one differs for not being contained in the Scriptures, that is a representation of St. Nicholas of Bari.Jesus is depicted crucified in the center according to the Byzantine manner, with one arm of the cross inclined to symbolize his value as the 'Scales of Justice'. At its feet is the skull of Adam, a symbol of humanity redeemed from original sin through the sacrifice of Jesus, while above the cross is the Byzantine cosmos with Jesus the Savior who blesses with one hand and holds the world in the other. There is the dove of the Holy Spirit and two angels who await the body and soul of Jesus. Directly above is the Madonna represented as the Virgin of the Signs, that is, with her hands raised and the frontal child inscribed in a circle. Still above, we see again the Madonna and Child surrounded by tondi depicting the four Evangelists. On the sides of the cross there are the saints in Deesis, that is, bowing to ask for the intercession of Jesus.The Russian Patriarchal cross is completed by a rayed decoration on the upper part that culminates in representations of six-winged angels.This Patriarch cross is made of bronze and polychrome enamel, comes from Moscow and measures 38.5x23.5cm.
