The painted Smolensk icon is protected by a precious gold and silver plated metal clasp, and is further enclosed by an ancient resealable case.According to tradition, the original icon depicting Our Lady of Smolensk was brought to Constantinople on the occasion of the marriage of the daughter of Emperor Constantine Monomachus, Anna, and the Prince of Chernigov Vsevolod. The son of Vsevolod and Anna Vladimir Monomachus brought the icon to Smolensk, from which it received the name Smolenskaya.The image depicts the detached Virgin and Child, with the Mother of God being represented with her right hand pointing to the Child Jesus who sits on her left hand, as if the Virgin were telling men that the true path is the path to Christ. This Our Lady of Smolensk icon is one of the oldest images of the Mother of God and the first Hodegetria thought to have been written by the first iconographer in history: St. Luke the Evangelist.The work is made on a solid linden wood panel and is painted with egg tempera.
