This icon of the Kazan Mother of God is, iconographically, a variant of the "Odighitria'' type that depicts the child in an upright position. It comes from central Russia in the first half of the 19th century, measures 35.5x31.5 cm and is painted with egg tempera.The first image was found in the city of Kazan on July 8, 1579 after the Madonna appeared three times to a nine-year-old girl who indicated the place where clandestine Christians had hidden the icon before the conquest of the city by the Tartars.The icon was considered protector of the Romanov dynasty and became one of the largest relics of Russia. The feasts of the icon are on July 8 and October 22, days during which a procession with the icon was made around the walls of Moscow as in this way it blessed the whole city giving it its invisible protection.Also during the Second World War a procession with the icon was made around the city of Leningrad besieged by the Nazis.This Our Lady of Kazan icon is delivered in an elegant blue velvet box with a certificate created by Russian experts.
