Unexpected Joy ancient icon 19th century Russia.Ancient icon dating back to the mid-1800s and from central Russia. This icon is painted on a wooden board measuring 35.5x28 cm treated with a traditional plaster mixture which makes it perfectly smooth.The subject of this Russian icon is inspired by a story by Saint Dimitrij, bishop of Rostov, whose incipit is written on a plaque under the image of the Virgin. The story deals with the story of a sinner who, despite his constant crimes, never failed to repeat the Archangel Gabriel's greeting to Mary in front of the icon of the Mother of God. One day, while the sinner was plotting another crime, the icon became covered with sores and began to lose blood from the hands and side of the Child. The man then prostrated himself before the icon, asking who had done this to his Lord. The Virgin then replied to him 'You and the other sinners continue to crucify my Son with your sins as the Jews did'. Struck by this sentence, the man asked for Mary's intercession and obtained forgiveness and the unexpected joy of repentance and salvation, which gives the icon its name.This ancient Russian icon is shipped with an export document and our expert's report.
