The painting is characterized by its lighting technique, which the figures seem to emit light but are not illuminated by external sources. The religious icon depicts the Madonna and Child according to the image of the Mother of God Donskaya, an icon attributed to Theophanes the Greek. The original icon is known for leading the Russians to victory over the Tartars in 1380, and for putting them back on the run from Moscow in 1591. The name derives from the Don region, where the Prince of Moscow Dimitri came from, who received it in 1380 after the battle. The icon measures 20x14 cm and is delivered in an elegant blue velvet box and satin interior. It includes a certificate of guarantee and pamphlet containing the history of the icon. This beautiful Romanian icon may have slight imperfections, a distinctive sign of the craftsmanship of the work.
