Icon Our Lady of the Three Hands Russia 14x10 red mantle.Russian orthodox icon of real size 14x11 cm depicting the ''Our Lady of the Three Hands'' on a golden background. This religious icon was made according to the principles of the Byzantine-Russian icon school and is hand painted on a solid linden wood board plated with gold leaf. The antiqued effect of the icon is given by the use of a craquelé technique.Despite being a modern icon, it is a faithful reproduction of one of the most famous archetypes of the 15th century ''Madonna with three hands'', a legendary motif dating back to the early Byzantine Empire. According to tradition, the motif of the ''Madonna with three hands'' derives from the legend concerning Saint John Damascene, who, condemned by the cruel Byzantine emperor Leo III to have his left hand cut off, however received the pardon in a moment of prayer in front of the icon of Hodigitria and her hand was miraculously reattached to her forearm by Our Lady's hand advanced out of the icon. For this miracle, St. John dedicated a vow to the Madonna in the form of a silver hand and this very hand is highlighted on the side of the icon.In this reproduction, the Virgin is represented with a red cloak and on her right arm she holds Jesus, who blesses with his right hand. In the lower part of the icon you can recognize the third hand, symbol of the vow of San Giovanni Damasceno.On the back, there is a ring to hang it and there is a guarantee certificate. Delivered in an elegant wooden box.
