Modern Russian icon of Softening Evil Hearts 31x27 cm. Modern Russian icon depicting Mary, Mother of God, ''Softener of Evil Hearts''. Also called ''Simeon's Prophecy'', it refers to the words of the righteous man that Mary and Joseph meet on the day of the presentation of the Baby Jesus in the temple. According to the Gospel of Luke, it was revealed to Simeon by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before seeing the coming of Christ. On the day of Jesus' presentation at the temple (40 days after his birth) Simeon takes the Child in his arms and recognizes him as the Messiah by pronouncing the famous words of thanks contained in the prayer which today is called the Canticle of Simeon (''Now leave, O Lord, may your servant go in peace according to your word, because my eyes have seen your salvation...'') and prophesying to Mary: ''a sword will pierce your soul too, so that they may be revealed the thoughts of many hearts''. The Virgin is depicted with 7 swords piercing her chest, three on the right, three on the left and one from below. Seven is the biblical number that indicates fullness. The Mother of God icon is delivered in an elegant blue box with satin interior.
