However, for Christianity, this name cannot be given to earthly creations and it is precisely because of the popularity of this image that there are several erroneous beliefs regarding his figure. In fact, only a theologian is able to understand the complex network and ties that unite the many entities of the celestial hierarchy. Essentially, a guardian angel is the Lord's representative for human affairs and is designed by God Himself to protect and guide each of us on the right path. Furthermore, an erroneous belief concerns its appearance. Most Orthodox Christian clergy share the idea that the guardian angel appears to a person after the sacrament of Baptism. However, the Holy Scriptures disprove this theory. According to the Holy Scriptures, in fact, everyone receives the protection of the Guardian Angel from birth, therefore regardless of religion and whether or not they receive the sacrament. As regards canonical symbolism, however, the Orthodox tradition wants the image of the Guardian Angel with a harmonious, symmetrical face, devoid of individual features or signs that denote age or sex. Furthermore, again according to canonical tradition, he is presented with a halo (sign of celestial origin) and, usually, white wings. He can hold a cross in one hand (sign of God's blessing) and a sword in the other (symbol of protection). The clothes are often painted red, and the coat is green or blue. However, this is simply canonical symbolism: angels are often depicted in clothes of other colors (in particular, pure white). Finally, the reference to the celestial essence of angels is usually given by a blue background, clouds or both.
