Russian icon of the Three Hands modern painting 31x27 cm. The history of the Russian icon Our Lady of the Three Hands dates back to the year 1716 in which the Doctor of the Church Giovanni Damasceno was unjustly accused by the Caliph of Damascus, who had his hand amputated. A devotional legend was born about the amputation of the hand which quickly spread, according to which John offered his severed hand to an image of the Madonna. The hand of the Virgin would emerge from the icon and reattach the offended limb. John then applied a silver votive hand to the icon. From that gesture the icon of the Our Lady of the Three Hands was created. Made with the egg tempera technique, the icon is delivered in an elegant blue box with a satin interior.
