This is one of the most loved and revered icons in ancient Russia and has been replicated many times: Ivan the Terrible took it with him into battle against the invading Tatars, in 1612 Russian troops used it in the liberation of Moscow from the Poles and in 1812 he was with the army of Tsar Alexander I against Napoleon's army. Initially this Russian orthodox icon, coming from Constantinople, would have been placed in a monastery in Kazan, from which, however, it later disappeared during the invasion of the Tartars. In 1579 the Virgin appeared in a dream to a girl to show her the place of her hiding place and so she was found and placed with honor in the cathedral of St. Nicola, which became famous for its miracles.In this modern reproduction, Mary is portrayed in a half-length portrait with her face turned towards the Child Jesus, who is represented in full-length standing to her left, blessing with his right hand.
