This Russian icon is a faithful copy of one of the most famous original archetypes of the Madonna of Kykkos. According to tradition, the icon of the Mother of God 'Kikkskaja' (or merciful) was painted by St. Luke and gets its name from Mount Kykkos in the northwestern area of the island of Cyprus. Initially located in a Christian community in Egypt, the icon was later transported to Constantinople and eventually brought to Cyprus during the reign of Emperor Alexios Komnenos (1082-1118). Upon its arrival in Cyprus, many miraculous events began to occur around it, leading to the construction of a church in honor of the Virgin on Mount Kykkos and later a monastery. Handmade and painted with a 'craquelé' technique to simulate an antique effect, this icon is covered with gold leaf and crafted on solid linden wood. Measuring 14x10 cm, it is sold in a linden wood box. Attached on the back is a guarantee certificate stamped to certify its authenticity and a label telling a brief story about the icon. A hook at the top allows for easy hanging.
