Russian icon of The Three Hands was made with traditional iconographic techniques of Orthodox art, by Russian painters. It is delivered in an elegant wooden box. According to scientists, the motif of the Madonna of the three hands originates from the early period of the Byzantine empire and belongs to the models willingly repeated in contemporary iconographic painting. It is connected to a legend about one of the most eminent Christian theologians, in which St. John of Denasco, condemned by the cruel Byzantine emperor Leo III to the cutting of his left hand, after the execution, he kneeled before the icon of Hodighitria. Deeply immersed in prayer, he noted, that the painting was illuminated by the miraculous light, but Madonna's hand advanced outside the painting and caused the theologian's hand to reattach to his forearm. From this memory of the miraculous event, St. John dedicated a vow to the Madonna in the form of a silver knot. And precisely this vote is in evidence on the bank of the icon.
