Russian icon Burning Bush 35x29 cm. In the Old Testament, one of the symbols that refers to the Mother of God is the Burning Bush, the bush that Moses saw burning without the fire consuming it. This image symbolizes the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin by the Holy Spirit and therefore the virginity of the Madonna before the Nativity, at the Nativity and after it. Another interpretation that can be assigned to the image of the burning bush concerns the unconditional purity of the Mother of God, who remained intact despite her birth on a sinful earth and prone to sin. Popular belief has it that this icon saves the homes of those who worship it from fire. According to an eyewitness, in fact, during a large fire only one (wooden) house was not engulfed in flames. Next to it a woman holding the icon in her hands. Despite the tears on his face and concern for others, his expression expressed absolute calm and unshakable faith. There are different representations of the burning bush but most of the time, as in this icon, it is represented with an octagonal star with the Mother of God in the centre. The star is composed of two quadrangles placed one above the other: one red to remember the color of the flames and the other green that recalls the bush. We also notice a man, an eagle, a calf and a lion, the symbols mentioned in the Apocalypse by John the Theologian. Next to them in the circle are the Archangels: Michael, Raphael, Uriel, Selafiel, Barachiel and Gabriel. The Virgin, on the other hand, is represented with the Child in her arms and a ladder in her hands that touches her shoulder, a sign that she has raised humanity from earth to Heaven.
