This orthodox icon depicts the Dormition of the Mother of God, or the passing of Mary before her Assumption into heaven.According to the doctrine Mary would not have really died, but would have only fallen into a deep sleep, after which she would have gone into heaven.The structure of the icon is dominated by the figure of Christ, wrapped in the light of the Resurrection, holding in his hands the soul of his Mother represented as a little girl, daughter of her Son. The Apostles and the Pious Women are depicted around the remains of Mary.This precious original Dormition icon dates back to the twentieth century. It is made of levkas wood and hand painted on gold leaf by Russian master painters. The Dormition of the Mother of God icon is made according to the Russian iconographic tradition and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Measures 31x26cm.
