According to Church tradition, the original icon was painted by the Apostle St. Luke in Gethsemane, 15 years after the Ascension of Our Lord. In the 453 the Emperor Leone I brought the icon to Constantinople. After Constantinople it was taken to Chersonesus (Korsun). The prince Vladimir gave the icon to the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Novgorod. Ivan the Terrible brought the icon to the Cathedral of the Dormition in the Moscow Kremlin in the 1571. In 1812, the icon was taken by the French troops and till today it in the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
