Modern Russian icon Descent into Hell 31x27 cm. Russian icon depicting Christ's descent into hell after the crucifixion. Although it has often focused on the representation of Christ's exit from the tomb, the Byzantine typology of the icon of the Resurrection intends to show, first of all, Jesus freeing the deceased from Hell, among whom it is possible to recognize them by the halo surrounding the their face, the patriarchs of the Old Testament. Christ takes them by the hand and leads them out of the depths of the earth to trample on the gates of hell, which lie next to shattered locks and broken chains. On the left, there is Adam kneeling with Jesus who raises him, pulling him up by the wrist, symbol of life.Eve is positioned, also on her knees, on the right side of Christ and is dressed in red, to indicate, as well as passion and love, motherhood, signified by her name: Mother of the living. Eve's hands are covered in worship. Next to the progenitors, four on each side, there are the kings and prophets, who awaited the Savior. The characters, depending on the icon, may vary, but they all reflect the light of Christ. In this case, it is possible to identify two other characters standing immediately behind Adam who we find crowned: King David and his son Solomon. Behind them the man pointing to Jesus can be traced back to the figure of Saint John the Baptist, while the character next to him is distinguished by the headgear called the Phrygian cap, red with a white band that ties it, which indicates a prophet.Made with the egg tempera technique, the icon is delivered in an elegant blue box with a satin interior.
