Modern icon Our Lady of Tikhvin Russia 31x27 cm. Icon depicting Mary, Mother of God of Tikhvin, one of the most venerated miraculous images in Russia. According to legend, the first appearance of the icon is dated in the year 1383 near Novgorod. He later appeared near the Tikhvinca River. During the German occupation of 1941 the icon was taken from the Tikhvin monastery and brought to Germany, subsequently it was kept in the Peter and Paul Cathedral of Chicago, in the United States. In 2004, the icon returned to Russia to the Tikhvinski monastery. The typology of the icon is that of the Hodegetria, whose particularity can be observed in the gestures of Mary and Baby Jesus: the Mother points to the Son with her right hand, showing humanity the true Way of salvation, while Jesus blesses her. The writing on the sides of the Mother's face represents the abbreviation, in Greek characters, for Mother of God, while the characters above the Child's head mean, again in Greek, Jesus-Christ. Hand painted on wooden board and levkas, using the egg tempera technique, the icon is a faithful copy of the original. It is delivered in an elegant blue box with satin interior.
