Hand-painted icon of Our Lady of Vladimir 31x27 cm. According to legend, the Russian icon was painted by the holy apostle and evangelist Luke on the table at which the Holy Family dined. Until 450, the icon remained in Jerusalem before being transferred to Constantinople under the empire of Theodosius the Younger. After that, in the 12th century Patriarch Luke Chrysoverg sent a copy as a gift to the Grand Duke of Kiev, Yuri Dolgoruky. His son Andrei, intending to create an independent possession from Kiev, brought the icon with him on his journey to northern Russia. After a stop in the city of Vladimir, the prince resumed his journey but, after several kilometers, the horses carrying the icon refused to continue at all costs. Thus the Virgin appeared to the prince ordering him to leave the icon in that place and to build a temple and a monastery in honor of her Nativity. Since then the icon has been known as Vladimirskaya. There are 3 days established by the Russian Orthodox Church for the celebration of this miraculous icon, each of which is associated with the liberation of the Russian people from slavery by the invaders. The celebration of September 8 according to the new calendar, (and equivalent to August 26 in the church calendar), was established in memory of the liberation from Tamerlane's invasion in 1395. The second date, namely July 6 (June 23) celebrates the liberation of Russia from the Horde king Akhmat in 1480. Finally, June 3 (May 21) honors the salvation of Moscow from the Crimean Khan Makhmet Giray in 1521.
