Christ Pantocrator Palekh icon Russian hand painted 31x26 cm. This religious icon of Russian origin, painted on panel, portrays Christ Pantocrator, one of the most iconic representations in the Orthodox tradition. Christ is illustrated in full form, sitting frontally on a throne, in a solemn and blessing attitude. In his left hand, he holds the Gospel open, while with his right he makes a gesture of blessing according to the Orthodox/Byzantine rite. The halo surrounding his head is decorated with the Greek letters meaning He Who Is, a symbol of his divinity. The face of Christ is rich in expressiveness, communicating the depth of the mystery of God incarnate. His distinctive features, such as hair parted in the center that falls on the nape of the neck, a broad forehead and a serious and attentive expression, are typical of the representation of Christ Pantocrator. The icon also shows Our Lady of the Sign in the upper left corner and Saint John the Apostle in the upper right corner, enriching the composition with key figures of the Christian faith. This representation was chosen by the Orthodox Church to allow the faithful to read and reflect on significant passages of the open Gospel, underlining the connection between writing and the figure of Christ.
