The Tenderness icon is in fact composed of a wooden base on which the canvas is stretched and multiple layers of plaster are added.The icon depicted here is the Madonna of Tenderness Vladimirskaya, an icon particularly revered in Russia and traditionally known for having chased the Tartars from Moscow three times. Painted at the beginning of the 12th century, this icon depicts the Virgin with a sweet but suffering face, aware of the drama of the cross that awaits her. The child, with an almost adult face, holds tightly on the mother's neck, and seems to almost tell her not to cry for him.This religious icon measures 22x18 cm and is hand painted.
