The icon of the Three Hands enjoys great popularity in the east and is linked to an episode that is linked to the life of San Giovanni Damasceno who stands out as a champion during the fight in the Empire of Constantinople against the enemies of the icons. The saint's hand was cut and exposed in pubic order of the emperor Leo Isauricus, irritated by the defense of John.
The legend says that in the evening John asked and obtained the return of his hand while he praying in front of an icon of the Madonna, promising eternal honor to the Virgin in case the limb was returned to him. So it happened and Giovanni thankfully prepared a silver hand that he suspended to the icon to remember the exceptional grace as an ex voto.
After distributing his wealth John retired to the monastery of Saba in Jerusalem where he composed hymns and melodies in honor of the Mother who had brought with him the miraculous icon.
In the thirteenth century, the icon was donated to the metropolitan of Serbia Saint Sava. When the Turks occupied Serbia, the icon was transferred to Mount Athos and is still honored in the Kilandari Lura.
The icon of the Madonna of the Three Hands is hand-painted in Romania, in a Romanian style, following the traditional iconographic techniques. It is delivered in a blue box with satin interior and includes a certificate of guarantee.
