This is one of the icons attributed to the brush of the evangelist Luke. It is called Hodegetria, that is "she who points the way" since the Mother of God gives everyone guide and eternal salvation. From Jerusalem ,the icon was transferred to Constantinople in 1046, and in the twelfth century Prince Vladimir Monomaco transported it to Smolensk, hence the name Mother of God Hodegetria of Smolenskaya. In 1237, during the invasion of the Golden Horde, the icon of the Mother of God pushed back the Mongol Tartars from the walls of Smolensk. In the following fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the icon remained in Moscow and once replaced in Smolensk a copy was made placed in the main church of the Moscow female monastery Novodevicij (New Convent of the Virgins) in the sixteenth century, where it is still located and where it is now a museum. The icon is celebrated on July 28th. The icon of the Mother of God Hodegetria-Smolenskaya is hand-painted in Romania, in a Romanian style, following traditional iconographic techniques. It is delivered in a blue box with satin interior and includes a certificate of guarantee.
