Icon Madonna Gruzinskaya, 30x20 cm hand painted in Romania.
Gruzija is the ancient name of the former Soviet republic of Georgia, where Christianity came very early. The Georgian Church has a patriarchate independent from that of Moscow, but this icon (Mother of God Gruzinskaya) is also widespread in Russia. The iconography resembles the Hodegetria type but differs in the particularity of the colors.
In 1625, a Russian merchant in Persia obtained this icon of the Mother of God which had been stolen by the Persians when they conquered Gruzija. Upon discovering this fact, the merchant was warned to donate the precious icon to the Krasnogorsk Monastery, where the icon became a miracle tool. The prayers put an end to a contagious disease in 1958, which spread to Moscow from 1654, and its feast was established in 1658.
The icon of the Mother of God Gruzinskaya is hand-painted in Romania, in a Romanian style, following the traditional iconographic techniques. It is delivered in a blue box with satin interior and includes a certificate of guarantee.
