The work belongs to the genus of Byzantine icons defined of the Mother Eleousa (The merciful), the most widespread type of Marian icon. The Virgin holds the child on her left arm, and tilts her head towards him as a sign of affection. The Child joins his cheek on hers, affectionately touching her face.
