The orthodox icon of the Smolensk Mother of God originally came to Constantinople from Jerusalem in 1046. It was a gift of blessing from Emperor Constantine Monomachus to his daughter Anna on the occasion of her marriage to the Prince of Chernigov. Later, in the 12th century, the son of Vsevolod and Anna, Vladimir Monomachus, transferred the icon to Smolensk, from which it received the name Smolenskaya. This icon is famous for the first miracle attributed to her intercession, which occurred in 1237, when the citizens of Smolensk, inspired by her presence, repelled the invasion of Can Batyi. The icon falls into the Odighitria type, with the Virgin Mary depicted frontally and her head slightly inclined towards the Child Jesus, who is indicated by his right hand as a symbol of the path to salvation. Jesus is supported by the left hand of the Virgin, while their heads are distinct to emphasize the importance of the maternal figure in Christian veneration.
