Icon Saint Nicholas Myra 800 wood restored 21st century Russia 31x26 cm.Icon depicting Saint Nicholas in bishop's robes, blessing. Hand-painted in Russia with the egg tempera technique in the 19th century and restored in the 21st century, the icon represents the bishop Saint Nicholas of Myra in a half-length portrait, adorned with crosses and with the Gospel in his hand. The Saint's determined and firm physiognomy symbolizes Nicholas' tenacious defense against the heresies of his time, specifically referring to the Council of Nicaea, convened in 325 by the Emperor Constantine, during which Nicholas opposed the heretical bishop Arius.Arius maintained that the nature of the Son was not equal to that of the Father and the bishops of the Council listened to him, except Nicholas, who lost his patience and in the middle of the Council gave Arius a slap. For his conduct, his bishop's robes were stripped from him and he was put in prison. That same night, according to tradition, Nicholas had a vision in which Jesus handed him the Scriptures, and Mary gave him back his clothes. When the jailer brought him food the next day, he saw Nicholas dressed as a bishop reading the Scriptures. After learning of that fact, Constantine asked for his release. Then the Council ended by agreeing with Nicholas. In the icon, Jesus and Mary are present on the sides of Saint Nicholas and accompanied by their respective inscriptions in Greek. In the East, Saint Nicholas is called ''of Myra'' because that was the diocese in which he exercised his episcopal ministry. In the West he is called ''Saint Nicholas of Bari'' because some Catholics stole the relics of the Saint, after the Muslim conquest of Anatolia, up to Bari. The icon is accompanied by a certificate of guarantee and originality, drawn up by an expert registered with the Chamber of Commerce. It is a faithful copy of the original and is delivered in an elegant blue box with satin interior.
