Icon Mother of God of Smolensk ancient hodegitria 800 restored Central Russia 28x23 cm. Ancient orthodox icon from central Russia depicting Mary, Mother of God of Smolensk. Hand painted on a wooden panel and levkas, it was made in the 19th century and restored in the 21st century. The icon represents the image of the Hodegetria-type Madonna, who points to the Son with her right hand, the only way of salvation for humanity. Jesus always blesses his Mother with his right hand, holding the scroll of the Holy Scriptures in his left hand. The Mother of God is represented frontally with her head slightly bowed towards the Child. Brought to Constantinople from Jerusalem in 1046 as a sign of blessing by Constantine to his daughter Anna on her wedding day, it was transferred to Smolensk by Vladimir Monomachus, Anna's son. The first miracles attributed to the image date back to 1237, when the inhabitants of Smolensk defeated Khan Batyi after praying before the icon. Subsequently the Russian army took the holy image with them as protection during Napoleon's invasion of 1812. The writings represent, in Greek characters, the name of Mary, Mother of God and of Jesus Christ.The icon comes with a certificate of guarantee and originality.
