Ancient Russian icon The sixteen Great Feasts 19th century 45x38 cm restored. The Russian icon depicts the 16 feasts that constitute the announcement of the Christian faith. Since the 18th century, especially in Russia, some iconographic schemes have developed which grouped the cycle of sixteen feasts into a single representation, making them revolve around the representation of Easter, which, as it is considered the 'mother of all feasts', becomes the scene main and therefore placed in the center. From the left, above, we identify the birth of Mary, her presentation in the temple, the Trinity in the New Testament, then arriving at the scene of the Annunciation by the archangel Gabriel and ending with the Nativity. We then move on to the presentation of Jesus in the temple, his Baptism by John the Baptist, the entry into Jerusalem and the transfiguration on Mount Tabor. The penultimate iconographic row sees the Ascension on the left and the resurrection of Lazarus on the right. Finally we move on to the ascension of the prophet Elijah into heaven, the joy of the afflicted and then arrive at the exaltation of the cross passing through the Trinity in the old testament and the dormitory of Mary. At the center, we find the representation of Easter including Christ's descent into hell, the procession of the blessed towards Paradise (in fact the good thief can be seen on the door), the resurrection of the Lord from the tomb and finally the apparition on Lake Tiberias. At the end of the icon the four Evangelists are portrayed.Subject: The sixteen great feasts of the liturgical yearOrigin: Moscow-RussiaTechnique: egg temperaMaterials: wood-levkasPeriod: 19th centuryRestoration date: 21st centuryMeasurements: 45x38x3 cm.The icon is shipped together with a protective case and an appraisal of the work by an expert.
