This orthodox icon, originally from 18th century Russia, draws inspiration from a story by the holy bishop Dimitrij of Rostov. The story tells of a sinner who, despite his numerous crimes, recited the angel Gabriel's greeting to Mary daily. During a moment of temptation towards a grave sin, the man observed the icon of the Mother of God come to life: blood began to flow from the side and hands of the Child, just as happened during the crucifixion. Struck by this miracle, the man prayed intensely asking for Mary's intercession and, after kissing the bleeding wounds of Christ, received forgiveness and the consolation of repentance and salvation.
