Ancient icon of the Madonna with Three Hands, 19th century Russia, 31x24.5 cm, restored. The icon is dedicated to Our Lady of the Three Hands and tells the story of Giovanni Damaskin whose right hand was cut off as punishment for a crime of which he was falsely accused. After having recovered the limb under the caliph's permission, John began to pray. Thus, Our Lady appeared to him and announced his recovery. Out of joy the man built and attached, under the miraculous image, a silver hand. In the meantime he was ordained a monk and brought the icon with him to the monastery. Subsequently, the sacred object was given to the archbishop of Serbia where another miraculous event occurred. In an attempt to save the icon from the enemy invasion of the Turks, the faithful placed it on a donkey which, wandering, reached Mount Athos, near the Hilendarsij monastery. Since then, the monks of the Hilendarsij monastery, who took the icon, elected only the figure of vicar, since, during a discussion on who should become parish priest, the Virgin indicated that she herself was entitled to that role. Since then, by tradition, monks receive the blessing directly from the icon.Subject: Madonna of the Three HandsOrigin: Moscow-RussiaTechnique: egg temperaMaterials: wood-levkasPeriod: 19th centuryRestoration date: 21st centuryMeasurements: 31x24.5x2.5 cm.The icon is shipped with a protective box and assessment by an expert.
