Ancient icon of Our Lady of Tikhvin painted 19th century restored 21st century Russia 34x27 cm. Icon depicting Mary Mother of God of Tikhvin, one of the most venerated miraculous images in Russia. According to various legends, the icon first appeared in the year 1383 near Novgorod, then on the left bank of the Tikhvinca River where the Church of the Dormition of the Madonna was later built. In 1658, an ancient Byzantine legend identified the image of Tikhvin with the Hodegetria of Byzantium who left the Byzantine capital in the 14th century to appear on the Tikhvinca river.
During the occupation of 1941, the icon was taken from the Tikhvin Monastery and taken first to Germany, then to the United States, to Chicago, where it was kept in the Peter and Paul Cathedral. In the year 2004 the icon was brought back to Russia to the Tichvinski monastery. The typology of the icon is that of the Hodegetria, whose most significant peculiarity lies in the gestures of Mary and Child Jesus: the Madonna indicates the Son with her right hand, while Jesus always blesses the Mother with the right. The figures of Christ and the Virgin are close, but separate. Mary's gesture shows men the true path: the path towards Christ. The Madonna looks straight ahead, seeking to meet the eyes of the faithful. The writing at the top on the sides of the Mother's face represents the abbreviation, in Greek characters, which summarizes the concept of Mother of God, while the characters above the Child's head mean, again in Greek, Jesus-Christ. Made on wooden board and levkas, the icon is hand painted using the egg tempera technique. The icon, a faithful copy of the original, is equipped with a certificate of guarantee and originality, with an appraisal drawn up by a certified expert. It is delivered in an elegant blue box with satin interior.Origin: Moscow - Russia.Technique: Egg tempera.Materials: wood - levkas.Measurements: 34x27 cm.Period: 1800 restored 21st century.
