Ancient icon Mother of God of Smolensk 800 restored Northern Russia 35x31 cm.Ancient Russian icon Mother of God of Smolensk from the 19th century, restored in the 21st century. The icon depicts the image of the Hodegetria-type Madonna, who points with her right hand to the Son, savior of humanity. The Child points to the Mother with his right hand, blessing her, while holding the scroll of the Holy Scriptures in his left hand. Brought from Jerusalem to Constantinople in 1046 as Constantine's blessing to his daughter Anna on her wedding day, it was transferred to Smolensk by Anna's son, Vladimir Monomachus.The miraculous significance of the image dates back to 1237, when the inhabitants of Smolensk defeated Khan Batyi after praying before the holy image. The Russian army later took the icon with them during Napoleon's invasion of 1812 for protection.The writings represent, in Greek characters, the name of Mary, Mother of God and of Jesus Christ. Made on wooden board and levkas, hand painted using the egg tempera technique, the icon comes with a certificate of guarantee and originality. It is delivered in an elegant blue box with satin interior. The icon is a faithful copy of the original.
