Travel icon Ancient Russian polyptych 19th century 17x40 cm. The use of metal icons became widespread from 1440 AD. with mass production, thanks to the impulse of the monastery foundries. Until 1600, the most used metals were bronze and copper, while from 1700 onwards brass and silver were used together with colored enamels. The most requested subjects were the Crucifix, the Virgin Mary, the Saints, the Holy Trinity and the Deesis.These icons had some advantages compared to the classic wooden one: low weight, affordable cost, resistance to wear and easy transportability. Thus, believers could always have the venerated image with them and could enjoy beneficial protection everywhere.This is a polyptych, made with the bronze casting technique, then it was enameled and gilded. It comes from Moscow and dates back to the 19th century. Measures 40x17 cm. The icon is sent in a box together with a report from an expert.
