The icon corresponds to the iconographic type ''Odigitria''. The icon represents one of the oldest images of the Mother of God and the first Hodegetria is thought to have been created by the first iconographer in history: St. Luke the Evangelist.The Our Lady of Smolensk icon is painted on a solid linden wood panel with egg tempera.
