Icon of the Life-Giving Spring, 26.5x22.5 cm.Precious Russian icon dating back to the first half of the 19th century and coming from Central Russia. This orthodox icon measures 26.5x22.5 cm and depicts the Virgin who, while holding up the divine Son, seems to be sitting in a fountain from which she emerges accompanied by two angels. The waters of this fountain, described as abundant and life-giving, flow from the source towards groups of people who drink it, showing with their attitude how desired and beneficial the water is.The iconographic representation refers to a historic event that took place in Constantinople in 450. The then soldier, later Emperor Leo I, helped a lost blind man by quenching his thirst and washing his eyes. Following the washing, the man recovered his sight and Leo I, crowned emperor, erected in that place a church dedicated to the Madonna invoked as Fonte Viva or vivifying.This Life-Giving Spring icon is made with egg tempera on a solid linden wood panel and is shipped together with a box set and an appraisal carried out by an expert.
