The icon represent the 'Exaltation of the Holy Cross' celebration each September 14 in memory of the various events referring to the history of Christ Holy Cross:
- The apparition of the Holy Cross to the Emperor Constantine, before the battle on Bridge Milvio in 312 (that marks end of Christian prosecutions);
- The finding of the historical Cross by Helen, mother of Constantine, in Jerusalem and its 'ostension' by the patriarch Macarius in 326;
- The building of the cathedral of the Resurrection on the spot of the Calvary, which was consecrated September 13, 335; the recovery eventually in 628 of the relics stolen by the Persians.
