Russian icon Dormition of Virgin Mary ancient mid 19th century.Ancient orthodox icon depicting the Dormition of Mary. This solemnity is the last in the cycle of the Twelve Byzantine Feasts, and celebrates the death of Mary and the ascent of her soul to Heaven. Contrary to the Western tradition, in this icon it is Jesus who descends to Earth, with a retinue of winged angels, and receives in his arms the soul of Mary depicted as a child in white swaddling clothes. At the feet of the radiant Christ is the body of Mary, revered and adored by the Apostles who came from all over to pay homage to her. In particular, to the left of the Virgin we see St. Peter with a thurible, intent on incensing her as a symbol of the Church that honors the Mother. Behind the composition you can see the buildings of Jerusalem.This religious icon dates back to the mid-1800s and comes from Moscow in Russia.
