Dormition of the Mother of God icon painted Russia 18th-19th century 35x30 cm. Russian icon depicting the scene of the Dormition of Mary, accompanied by a report drawn up by an expert and elegant box. The Catholic doctrine of the Assumption of Mary states that Mary, mother of Jesus, was transferred to heaven with body and soul at the moment of her death, also called the Dormition. According to this belief, Mary was welcomed into Paradise, alongside her Son and God the Father. The absence of a known burial site for Mary, which would otherwise have attracted millions of pilgrims and on which a large shrine might have risen, is seen as indirect evidence that her body was taken up into heaven. In Byzantine art, Mary is often represented on her deathbed, surrounded by the Apostles, with Christ holding her soul in his arms, symbolized by an infant in swaddling clothes, while angels welcome her.
