The crucifix has a dark red background with which the body of Christ stands out, portrayed not as dying but with a distinctive royalty and asceticism typical of the Byzantine style. Unlike the Western tradition, Christ is portrayed here as affixed to the cross on four nails, and with a third arm inclined to remind us that the cross is the 'Scales of Justice'.
