The icon lends its name to the monastery of Mount Athos where it arrived on May 31 999. The religious icon protected the monastery several times from the attack of enemies and pirates, and for this reason it became one of the most important relics of monks.This icon belongs to the "Odighitria" iconographic type. The Mother of God is represented with her head slightly bowed towards the child. The open flaps of her robe show 2 the "chiton".
