The art of Russian lacquers comes from icon painting, after their decline at the end of imperial Russia. Lacquers thus became a way for painters to support themselves, and were often decorated with fairy-tale or everyday scenes. This is why they are considered a full expression of the popular soul.Lacquers spread in particular from 1798, when the papier-mâché company was founded, it became famous thanks to the management of the Lukutin merchant family. The first competitor of Lukutin lacquers was Vishnyakov, whose competition led to the flourishing and perfection of lacquered boxes throughout the course of the 19th century.This lacquer box is just a Vishnyakov and measures 5x14x9 cm. It comes with an export document and certificate of authenticity.
