Antique icon St Nicholas Mozhaysk, XVIII century in tempera gold background 44.2x38.5x2.8 cm.
It is a Russian variant of the Saint Nicholas of Myra. Legend has it that during the 14th century siege the residents of Mozhaisk prayed to Saint Nicholas who presented himself holding a sword in his right hand and the city in his left hand, frightening the Mongols who decided to withdraw. Grateful citizens decided to erect a wooden monument in honor of St. Nicholas.
