This Russian icon refers to the Annunciation event. The scene of the Annunciation displays the Gospel of Luke, the appearance of the archangel Gabriel who appears to the Virgin Mary to bring her the good news of the birth of the Son of God kept in her womb. We find in the Annunciation of Ustiug one of the oldest images of the Annunciation, painted in the first half of the XII century in Novgorod.
