Ancient Russian icon Veneration of the Saints 18th century 36x34 cm. The image of this orthodox icon was found in Kazan 1579 by a little girl after the Madonna appeared to her three times to show her the place where it had been hidden. In 1612, a copy of the icon was brought during the war to liberate Moscow from the Poles, and thanks to this icon Moscow was liberated on October 22, 1612, since then the icon was considered the protector of the Romanov dynasty and became one of largest relics of Russia. During the feast of the icon, held on July 8 and October 22, a procession with the icon was made around the walls of Moscow starting from the Dormition Cathedral in the Kremelin to the Kazan Cathedral on Red Square where the miraculous image, to bless the city and give it its protection. In the 18th century the icon was considered the protector of the capital St. Petersburg, where the Kazan Cathedral was built.
