In the year 1155 Prince Saint Andrew Bogolubski brought this icon to the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir, on the Kliasma River. Its fame and name derive from this city. The religious icon was then moved to Moscow so that it could intercede against the invasion of the Tartars commanded by can Tamerlan.The icon then found its definitive home in Moscow in 1480, because it miraculously saved the city from devastation. The feast of the icon takes place three times a year: on August 26, June 23 and May 21.The icon belongs to the ''Tenderness'' iconographic type, in which Baby Jesus with his cheek resting on the right of the Madonna. The Virgin symbolizes the tenderness between the Mother and the Son, but also the Church of Christ and the close bond with man. It was made on a lime wood board with egg tempera.
